CT, MRI and PET scans are typically described as an Outpatient benefit on Health Insurance plans. Outpatient care is where you visit the hospital for treatment but you don't need to stay overnight.
In the first instance, your Table of Cover, which is accessible via our Member Area, will tell you what Outpatient Benefits are covered on your plan.
To find your Table of Cover select 'View cover and Documents' on the home screen once logged in.
The Table of Cover will be in a document called 'Welcome Letter'.
For some plans your outpatient benefits will be in two sections - subject to excess and not subject to excess. With benefits subject to excess, an excess amount will be specified, for example €150. This means that for a given treatment, you pay the first €150 and Irish Life Health pays the remainder of the cost.
For benefits not subject to excess Irish Life Health pays the full cost of the treatment.
If your scan is carried out in an approved centre (i.e. a scan facility that is covered in the appropriate table for your scan type in your List of Medical Facilities), we will pay the scan facility directly.
If your scan is carried out in a non-approved centre (i.e. a scan facility that is not covered in your List of Medical Facilities) you will have to pay for your scan yourself and claim the amount that is covered back from us, if cover for non-approved centres is included in your plan. You can do this during or at the end of your policy year by scanning your original receipts and submitting them through our Online Claims application in our Member Area.
You should keep your original receipts for your own records and in case the images are unclear and we request them to be resubmitted.
